"Songs
most proud of are 'Chiseled in Stone' --I didn't know how bad I
could hurt until I saw my son's name on his tombstone; 'Look at Us'
as a tribute to my wife Patsy and all the happy years that we've
shared, and Vince feels the same way about his wife Janice; 'Who's
Gonna Fill Their Shoes' --it's a tribute to some of my heroes but I
couldn't name them all; 'Storms of Life' --it was the first time I
heard Randy Travis. I thought he was great and still do. He's
pure country and it was also my first platinum album; 'Way Down Deep'
--it was the first song my son Max Troy and I wrote together and it
was his first big hit.
I
try to write so there's no confusion. Country music is for
ordinary people. That's what I am and I don't ever want to get above
that. I try to trim every excess word. A song is like a
mini-drama. You have to capture them in that three minutes or
it doesn't work.
My
career has been a long, steady climb. Country music has been
so good to me and the acceptance of my songs. |
I've
met the best of the best, my heroes that I've admired. I've
been truly amazed at how down to earth and real they are. To
earn your living doing something that you love is great. I've
been blessed with many awards throughout the years and I'm truly
thankful for all that I've achieved. I hope there is more to
come. I'd like to believe the next song that I write will be my best.
The
highlight of my career has been winning two CMA Song of the Year
awards, Song of the Year award from NSAI and being inducted into the
Songwriters Hall of Fame."
