1924--first composition, "Riverboat Shuffle," was recorded by Bix Beiderbecke and the Wolversine, a jazz group from Chicago

1927--went to West Palm Beach, FL (to work as a law clerk) where he heard a recording of his song, "Washboard Blues," by cornetist Red Nichol's band; it was then he decided to abandon law and try a career in music

1927--first version of "Stardust" written

1971--National Academy of Popular Music\Songwriters' Hall of Fame induction\one of 10 initial inductees
