Bob Dylan, Shel Silverstein, Dean Dillon Inducted into Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame “I’m Movin’ On” is NSAI Song of the Year; Troy Verges is Songwriter of the Year Nashville, TN - Bob Dylan, the late Shel Silverstein and Dean Dillon are the newest additions to the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. The three men were inducted Sunday, Nov. 3, during annual ceremonies conducted by the Nashville Songwriters Foundation at Loews Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel in Nashville. In conjunction with the Hall of Fame inductions, the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) conferred a series of Songwriter Achievement Awards. “I’m Movin’ On,” by Phillip White and D. Vincent Williams, was named Song of the Year. The Songwriter of the Year prize went to Troy Verges, writer of “Tonight I Wanna Be Your Man.” From the left: Frances Preston, President & CEO of BMI Dean Dillon, a 2002 NSF Hall of Fame Inductee, Wayland Holyfield, Chairman of the Board of the Nashville Songwriters Foundation A collection of top Nashville tunesmiths – including Pat Alger, Gary Burr, Roxie Dean, Angela Kaset, Fred Knobloch, Gretchen Peters, Hugh Prestwood, Don Schlitz and Thom Schuyler – teamed up to pay tribute to Bob Dylan, whose classic songs include “Like A Rolling Stone,” “Lay Lady Lay,” “All Along The Watchtower,” “Blowin’ In The Wind,” “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight” and “To Make You Feel My Love.” Hall of Fame member Schlitz inducted Dylan, whose tour schedule prevented him from attending. Singer/songwriters Bobby Bare and Don Henry revived favorites from Shel Silverstein’s catalog, which includes “A Boy Named Sue,” “Marie Laveaux,” “The Unicorn,” “Queen Of The Silver Dollar,” “Sylvia’s Mother” and “The Cover Of The Rolling Stone.” Longtime friend Bare inducted Silverstein. Leslie Satcher and MCA recording artist George Strait treated the audience to a sampling of Dean Dillon’s many hits, a collection that includes “Homecoming ’63,” “All The Good Ones Are Gone,” “Set ’Em Up Joe,” “The Chair,” “Nobody In His Right Mind Would Have Left Her,” “Unwound” and “Ocean Front Property.” Hall of Fame member Red Lane formally welcomed Dillon into the Hall. Each Hall of Fame inductee was presented with the coveted “Manny” (short for “Manuscript”) Award. Besides honoring the Song and Songwriter of the Year, the writers of NSAI’s Professional Songwriters Division also singled out 10 songs and their writers for its 2002 Achievement Awards (informally dubbed “The Songs I Wish I’d Written”). Recipients were “Angry All The Time” (Bruce Robison), “Bring On The Rain” (Billy Montana, Helen Darling), “I Wanna Talk About Me” (Bobby Braddock), “I'm Movin' On’ (Phillip White, D. Vincent Williams), “I’m Tryin’” (Chris Wallin, Jeffrey Steele, Anthony Smith), “Long Time Gone” (Darrell Scott), “Ol’ Red” (Mark Sherrill, Don Goodman, James Bohon), “Riding With Private Malone” (Thom Shepherd, Wood Newton), “The Good Stuff” (Jim Collins, Craig Wiseman) and “Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)” (Alan Jackson). “I’m Movin’ On” was the top choice of the NSAI Pro writers. Four Troy Verges songs – Jessica Andrews’ “Who I Am,” Martina McBride’s “Blessed,” Trisha Yearwood’s “I Would’ve Loved You Anyway” and Andy Griggs’ “Tonight I Wanna Be Your Man” – placed among the top 40 vote-getters and earned Songwriter of the Year honors for Verges. # # # mail@nashvillesongwritersfoundation.com
