Biography
Mississippi native Jim Weatherly began writing songs when he was 13 years old. He performed in bands throughout high school, then became a star quarterback at the University of Mississippi. He moved to Los Angeles and rose to songwriting prominence when Gladys Knight & The Pips recorded “You’re The Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me,” “Neither One Of Us,” “Where Peaceful Waters Flow” and “Midnight Train To Georgia” in 1973-74. “Neither One Of Us” and “You’re The Best Thing” have since been recorded by dozens of artists. Weatherly has earned more than 30 ASCAP awards, plus BMI Awards for “A Lady Like You” (Glen Campbell) and “Someone Else’s Star” (Bryan White). Weatherly’s “Where Shadows Never Fall” (Glen Campbell) earned him a 1992 Dove Award. Although his earliest successes were in Pop music, the bulk of Weatherly’s hits have occurred in the Country field, and he has been a Nashvillian since 1985. His songs have been recorded by Eddy Arnold, Kenny Rogers, Vince Gill, Steve Wariner, Tanya Tucker, Brenda Lee, Charley Pride and Bill Anderson, among others. Ray Price has recorded more than 50 Weatherly songs. In addition, Weatherly has made seven albums as an artist, scoring a Top-10 Country hit with “I’ll Still Love You” (1975) and a Pop hit with “The Need To Be” (1974).
